Pilr is a fusion of psychoeducation, training and counselling for carers delivered online within their first two years of caring.
Pilr is a self-directed and interactive eight week program that allows carers to work at their own pace towards weekly set goals that focus on their experiences, expectations and realities of caring for a family member. Carers receive direct face-to-face counselling sessions from an experienced Psychologist or Social Worker to discuss the module of the week, allowing them a safe space to talk freely about their experiences and to work through any issues they may be facing early in their care journey.
The program is designed to provide emotional and psychological support to kinship carers within the first two years of caring and is trauma and attachment focused. Pilr works to strengthen the relationship between carers and the children in their care by providing carers with the tools they need to manage the complex challenges they face as kinship carers. It gives carers an opportunity to work through and accept what they can and cannot control, while supporting them to acknowledge and resolve their own emotional responses to caring such as grief and loss, shame, blame, anxiety or frustration.
By supporting carers emotionally and giving them an opportunity to address their own unique experiences of kinship care, we believe that the result will be stronger, more unified placements for the children in their care. We aim to build on a carer’s resilience and coping strategies to minimise the risk of placement breakdown, and to provide them with the emotional tools necessary to support permanency planning for children in their care.
What are the goals of the program?
-
To strengthen the foundations of the kinship care environment by providing carers with the emotional and psychological support they need in the critical first months of caring.
-
To support carers to build resilience and develop coping strategies that promote a healthy care environment for children and young people.
-
To minimise placement breakdowns and support permanency planning for children in kinship care. We envision that all kinship carers will complete the program within the first two years as part of the Case Plan for the child.
-
To support carers with skills and knowledge to provide trauma informed care.
-
To improve the relationship between Caseworkers and kinship carers to reduce the possibility of complaints against the support agency.
